So, in case you haven't heard, Merriam-Webster has added "fanboy," among others, to their dictionary. The female equivalent, fangirl, received no such recognition because it's not used enough.* (The internet doesn't count and I think they're looking for more, uh, academic stuff than this, but here's a start.)

So, even though it will be of no help at all, I propose a contest. I want a story. about a girl. who is a fan. of something. She has to be fangirly - this means more than a passive interest in a TV show. This is otakudom/Trekkiedom/etc. She goes to cons, she writes fanfic, she runs a zine, she camps out to get her tickets/book/computer hardware/new console/movie/whatever, she speaks Sindarin/Klingon, or something equally fannish. She is ... a fangirl.

Other than that, you're free to do as you please. Smile

I don't care what the genre is, what the plot is, whatever. Just write a story about a fangirl, and you have to use the word "fangirl." It must be at least one of the 3,000-5,000 words you write. (Oh, and post it by August 12th, please.)

Those are the requirements. If you're looking for brownie points, consider the following: I really hate the "wah, I'm not popular!" cliché. It's overdone and pretty boring (and not true! - a lot of fangirls, like me, revel in our fangirliness). So that will, you know, bias me against your story.

Oh, and prizes!

Everyone's story will get a review from me, of course. The winner will get three stories/poems of their choice reviewed, the second place gets two, the third place gets one (all of this in addition to the submission).

... and before you ask, I've got nothing against fanboys. You guys just get all of the credit and it's time us girls get a chance!

^_^ This sounds fab. Does the fangirl have to be the sole main character, or can she co-star?

I love it!

I used to be a rabid fangirl in my teeny-bopper days. And... still am, now, minus the rabid.

So I'll enter. C:

I will enter this. I'm terrible at actually entering contests, but this sounds awesome. I'm a complete fan-girl of Doctor Who, so 'll just use that.

This will be great!

She can be a co-star, but I'd prefer to get equal weight (two MCs, instead of an MC and a sidekick). This is about getting fangirls the recognition they deserve.

I look forward to your entries.

Ooh, sounds fun! I'm in! As soon as I write a freaky story for clograbby. This sounds like a nice break after I get done with that one and before I start on the horror story for BBB. XD

Umm... do you think that you might be ableto give me an extension? I'm about half-way through something, but my life is going to be really hectic over the next week.

I can probably get someting to you by the end of August.

Whoops, just saw your post chocoholic, and yup, you can have an extension. Everyone can. Let's say stuff is due by 1. September (though it will take me longer to judge because I'll be in school).
