ER, WHAT?
Skimming - or even critiquing - through the Fiction forums, one ever so rarely find pieces focused on children, ones where the MC is a child. Oh, they might be mentioned, of course, and they are there, but scarcely any of the is the main character. Teenagers are usually preferred, and perhaps adults. What I’d like to happen, through this contest, is for a few child-centered works to sprout here and there. Anywhere, in fact, as long as it’s prose.
So. Write a piece from a child’s POV. It can be anything really, but I want to feel that it is a child telling - showing - everything.
WHAT’LL BE JUDGED
-> Everything that makes a well-written piece, of course, but pressure will be put on realism, and hearing the child’s “voice” in the story.
RULES, in no particular order.
-> The MC has to be ten years old or younger. That means that yes, he or she can have her birthday tomorrow, or theoretically still be in the womb.
-> You cannot post old stand-alone pieces. However, should you want to write about a character in your current writing project - well, so long it’s not the MC, then feel free. Just post from where he or she came from (the character, that is).
-> Up to two entries are permitted, though you can, of course, post one. It is encouraged - or, demanded, if you wish - that you not write about the same person those two times.
-> There is no minimum as far as words are concerned, but the maximum is 5,123.
-> The genre is anything under Fiction.
-> I will not be able to critique your piece; write in the subtitle that it is for my contest, so I don’t accidentally do so! Questions concerning posting should be answered a tad bit below, but one rule does have to be mentioned here: I will not read submissions that were PMed to me.
-> Last but not least, and the crux of it all, the piece has to be written in first person, from the MC’s perspective.
WHERE TO POST
-> In the Fiction forums, wherever it fits. Remember about the subtitle.
-> Post the link in this thread.
-> Do not forget that I do not accept PMed submissions!
PRIZES, or rewards for all that nerve-wracking writing.
-> I place - you get 5 pieces of your choosing ripped into shreds. 200 points are included.
-> II place - likewise, but with 3 works; you’ll PM me with titles. 100 points will be given.
-> III place - a critique of any two pieces you want, and 50 symbolic points.
DEADLINE
-> The last minutes of the 30 of August is when you start to panic, and when I stop accepting submissions. I’m open to any necessary extensions, however, and the date is flexible as far as your local time is concerned.
Well, I think that is all I have to say. If I‘ve omitted anything, then post the question - and, of course, links to the submissions - here. Hopefully there'll be some interest
And, good luck! |

Hey Esmé,
this sounds really neat. I can't promise anything, but I shall try to enter. Hopefully you get plenty of entries! Writing from a child's pespective can be so enchanting. Sad that not all that many people do so.
All the best,
~Kalliope |

I agree with Kalliope; writing from a kid's POV is wonderful. I shall try to enter! If you don't hear from me in a few weeks, don't hesitate to poke me (via PM).

Awesome! The deadline is really far off, so I don't suppose you all have to worry about that I really look forward to any entries. |

| I really want to enter this, since the prompt is basically identical to one at another writing site and I could totally double-dip. It would be fun because it could take me a little outside of my comfort zone, I guess - I usually stick to narrators my own age, or older. I'll think on it. |

Wow. I have the perfect thing.
So... it could be a chapter of a story? I mean, I'm writing a novella of sorts called Frequency, and the child is under ten. It's already posted on the site... but if old stuff isn't allowed, would I be able to re-write it and submit it?

Yay, contestants (or future ones). I would very much like for all of you to enter : )
Jared - so long as the child is not the MC of “Frequency”, just a secondary or side character, then it’s fine. A sort of a read along, I’d call it… The entry can touch the original plot of “Frequency” - I just want it to be able to stand on its own.

Can I use an already existing character, just so long as the story stands up by itself? Please please please please say I can |

Yes. You can use that character if it's not the MC of the original project. and if the plot of the entry is not equal to the one of "Frequency". And yes, a stand alone. |

I assume you'd just post the story in the appropriate forum (i.e. Historical Fiction, Romantic Fiction, etc) and then post the link to the posted story here.
Esmé>> Just wanted to let you know that I've finished my entry and am editing it. I should post it sometime today or tomorrow.
