Some Kind of Wonderful: Cal's Romance/Bodice Ripper Contest

Because the last one went oh-so-well.

Very Happy

About

I have created another table of doom, in the contest you will pick five of the words from the table to use as prompts. You can write in any format you want: script, poetry, story, etc. Your story has to be of romantic tidings or something in the romantic genre.

Five because I am giving you guys till May 30th to write them, so you'll have a month to write each, in a perfect world.

Here is an example that I wrote.

Length: These are meant to be short pieces, I don't except five, fully completed stories, so don't stress yourselves out.

Word count: There are no restrictions on word count.

Timeline: ANY TIME, PLACE, OR FIGMENT OF REALITY YOU WANT IT TO BE IN. This means you can have it be of any sub-genre, such as Historical Fiction or Sci-Fi.

NEW Deadline: 11:59 PM June 30, 2008
- new deadline is for those already committed to contest by June 15th 1159 PM

Rules

> no more/no less than five entries per person
> must be of romantic or bodice-ripping goodliness
> entries must be proofread or I might send you to that special hell.
> Have Fun!

How to Post

Post your entries in the proper sub-forum on YWS, e.g. Dramatic Poetry or Historical Fiction. You can post them as one entry or multiple entries. Then post the link(s) to your entry here or PM me the link(s). Somewhere in your entry or post here what five prompts you are using.

Prizes

Judging is based on all those good writerly things, as well, including plot, characterization, diction, style, description, imagery, syntax, symbolism, etc.

First -- Three of Cal's Proper Critiques and a fanmix. To see an example of a fanmix click here.
Second -- Two of Cal's Proper Critiques and a fanmix.
Third -- One of Cal's Proper Critiques and a fanmix.

Basically, the same prizes as my last contest.

Table of Doom

Sorry, I can't figure how to input the table, so you'll have to open it up in another window or tab. This is actually a mini table, I cut the prompt words to choose from in half.

Mini-Table of Doom

Good luck,
Cal.

Oh, I truly cannot pass up another chance to play with your tables. ^_^ Though, if I get the winning place again, disqualify me for something, hahah. Not that I am saying I will win or anything. Romance isn't exactly my forte.

And, to that, what exactly must there be in a romance? A relationship? The topic of love? Naughty things? Romance shows up in my stories, and I've read romance, but I'm baffled by the idea of writing a piece in the romance genre, hehe. Could it be further...dumbed down?

I know I'm really bad at actually entering the contests, but I've written my first one, so that should get me going.

Don't be suprised if I don't actually enter, though.

I would also like to enter this. Is there a way to specify which peices are up for judging? Also, is there a limit to how many words from the table you can use?

So, to answer in another way, five words is how many you can use. I am not sure exactly what you are asking about 'specifying what pieces are up for judging'. Do you mean where to post or send them to to be judged?

Ta,
Cal.

I must quote Suzi's questions and add my own:
Suzanne wrote:
And, to that, what exactly must there be in a romance? A relationship? The topic of love? Naughty things?

Can the least we have be sparkage/flirting? Or must it be more obvious than that, with a clear relationship between the couple (kissing, touching, looks [of the eye sort])? Also, must both parties involved be present in the piece, or can it be one character reflecting upon a romantic relationship?

I'm afraid we need Cal's definition of "romantic tidings or something in the romantic genre". Smile

P.S. I've got my five words/ideas picked out. Excitement!

Perra,

w00t!

Erm, yeah. Let's see if I can do some explainin' proper. It can include all the things you listed: sparkage/flirting, clear relationship, one or more of the characters involved, character reflection.

Really, it just needs to focus on romantic love or a romantic relationship(s) between people, or be a scene involving a couple, or someone pining over someone else, even a break up.

I know, it's quite a list of possibilities.

According to the Romance Writers of America, the main plot of a romance novel must revolve around the two people as they develop romantic love for each other and work to build a relationship together. But since these are shorts they can be any part of the romance.

I hope that helps.

Ta,
Cal.

Not that I'm particularly in need of winning this, but it is just fine if the word is mentioned and actually has nothing to do with the section?

In the last contest, the words shaped the pieces a lot. This time around, the story is making the word conform to it, haha, and for the most part, the words are only mentioned. Is this alright?

Also! I only have one left to write. Though, I have much editing to do.

*whimpers*

I be torn. On the one hand - a Table of Doom, which is simply wonderful for getting da duices flowin'. On the other - romance, something that I try to avoid at all costs. >.<

Oy vey. I'll give it a shot.
