Everything is labeled. Take a 360 degree scope of the room surrounding. Is there a single item present without a penned name? Even further, most of these items are stamped by corporations, twisting and contorting our view of basic goods, preaching their quality and step on the social ladder. An item no longer is solely an item, each one has become a style, a declaration of stance, thanks to advertisement agencies cashing in on our reluctance to “waste time.” I’d say it’s a favorable trade. We’re purchasing time with money, and trusting those with our money to in return give us a worthy product without a hassle. However, in this transaction we’ve lost our ability to distinguish. We accept without analysis. Forgotten is our sense of personal discernment for our surroundings.
The current era is saturated with titles and classifications. In our well established society a need to understand and discover for oneself is no longer demanded. Instead we are told and forced to remember. This lack of subjective experience is limiting our ability to see through our own eyes. We now see in generalities and accepted forms of thought. The monotonous form culture has adopted over the years lacks ingenuity of experience. A void in life has emerged, an increase in life-spans and a quickening pace to adulthood is partially at fault. As children we are taught words and shown pictures, but how often were we taken out into the world and shown the real thing? Living has become a matter of teaching and accepting, instead of witnessing and creating.
The matter at hand is increasing, just in different aspects of our lives. It began with language ushering in the massive spread of communication, and was furthered with increase in technology and the compiling of knowledge. The information age is here, and the load is too much to bear. To appear as a well informed person you don’t have time to question all the knowledge thrown your way, you’re left to accept it and move on to the next event and presented facts. Our culture has turned into a race where the quick and active are brought to the forefront while the slow and thoughtful fall out of sight and out of mind.
What do they wish to accomplish? Better service or a fatter wallet? The latter is likely. In the world creativity lacks and a general understanding of our surroundings suffer. Through language we’ve lost the ability to discover for ourselves. With the labeling of all around we no longer have to critically think of what were witnessing. Lost are the days of adventure and novelty, now were existing in a life of rumination and declaration of invention. Fearless we head into our lives with an air of condescension toward uncivilized cultures of past and present. They live in a state of ignorance, or so we think. But truly what is our differences? Technology? We’d like to think of ourselves are more developed futuristic beings while they jump off history books dusted on shelves. We’re the same however, just brought up differently, every current generation is raised to accept the dominant culture of their birth. That’s the sole difference. They accept labels just as us. The difference is their jargon is derived from knowledge. The American must have it plastered in words on everything. Advertisement we call it. Large market it truly is. Too lazy to judge for ourselves our consumption habits, rather we leave it up to others to tell us. What have they done to gain our unrestricted trust? A flashy symbol or trademark. The mutual agreement we’ve made with business is, give us our time and we’ll give you our money. Worrying about petty things such as what I’m drinking pales in comparison to our next event to rush off to.
