Ok. I know I've tried this before, but a few people have said that they would have been interested, but didn't see it until the closing date had passed, so I'm trying again.

They can be written on any theme, and can be either Shakespearean or
Petrach. For people who haven't done a sonnet before, in the first quatrain you introduce the theme, you develop it in the second, reflect on it in the third, and use the couplet at the end to sum it all up and add closure.

Iambic pentameter is recommended (ten syllabyls in each line), and will earn extra marks, though if you want to be experimental and not use it, I'll still judge your entry.

For Shakespearean sonnets, the scheme is ababcdcdefefgg, and for Petrach, you have a choice of abbaaabba cdcdcd, ot abbaabba cdecde, or abbaabba cdedce. It doesn't matter in the slightest which one you use.

This time though, for the sake of variety, I'm introducing themes. I'll keep them fairly broad. For example, you can base your poem around the theme, or simply refer to it once.

1st) Transport
2nd) Love (How original!)
3rd)An object, any object.
4th) A particular time of year. (Day, month season, etc)

The deadline December 31st.You can pm any entries to me.

First place will get 5 critiques, second will get three, and third will get one. I don't tend to critique art, as I don't know anything about it, and I think I'm a better poetry critic than I am a story/essay critic, but I'm happy to critique any piece of writing. If you want to send a chapter of a novel or a scene from a play, this counts as one piece. (Depending on the length of the play.) Alternatively, you can have points, 200 for 1st, 100 for second, 50 for third, just tell me which you'd prefer.

I think that's everything. Feel free to post any questions you have here.

I'm very tempted my dear but I've never been great at sonnets...

First off, thanks a million to everyone who entered. I really enjoyed the sonnets and each of you rose to the challenge. Judging this was tough, but I have the results now. The winners can just let me know whether you would prefer points or critiques, and you can PM the pieces which you would like me to critique to me whenever you want, but if it's in the distant future just remind me that I owe you critiques for this contest, ok? So, without further ado, the winners are as follows:

THIRD PLACE: Cold And Broken Halleluja

SECOND PLACE:xhalcyonx128

FIRST PLACE:Fangala the Flying Feline

Congratulations to you all!

Could you tell us who wrote the first poem? I'm quite curious...

Sorry, would you like to know who came first, or who sent me the first poem? If it's the former, the answer is Fangala (see above)...if the latter, just please clarify and I'll check for you, because I can't remember off the top of my head! Smile
