Hi. I thought a sonnet contest might be interesting. I love sonnets, and think they're good for building discipline.

They can be written on any theme, and can be either Shakespearean or Petrach. For people who haven't done a sonnet before, in the first quatrain you introduce the theme, you develop it in the second, reflect on it in the third, and use the couplet at the end to sum it all up and add closure.

Iambic pentameter is recommended (ten syllabyls in each line), and will earn extra marks, though if you want to be experimental and not use it, I'll still judge your entry.

For Shakespearean sonnets, the scheme is ababcdcdefefgg, and for Petrach, you have a choice of abbaaabba cdcdcd, ot abbaabba cdecde, or abbaabba cdedce. It doesn't matter in the slightest which one you use.

The deadline September 24th, which is just two weeks. I think that should be enough time, so all poems need to be received by then. It can be extended if people have serious problems making it. You can pm any entries to me, or just pop a link in here, whichever suits you best.

First place will get 5 critiques, second will get three, and third will get one. I don't tend to critique art, as I don't know anything about it, and I think I'm a better poetry critic than I am a story/essay critic, but I'm happy to critique any piece of writing. If you want to send a chapter of a novel or a scene from a play, this counts as one piece. (Depending on the length of the play.)

Think that's everything... Smile

EDIT: The deadline is now September 30th.

Entrants:
Cadmium

Good idea Jasmine and I'll enter if I have the time. It's been a while since I've written a sonnet so it should be fun =)

Two weeks will be a tough deadline for me, but I shall try it! I love sonnets; it's a great idea.

Ya. I'm extending the deadline by a week to give people more time.

Awww! I wish I had seen this sooner! I wrote a Petrarchan sonnet a little while ago, an adaptation of his sonnet... 135 i think. *pouts* I wish.

That's a pity. I only had one entrant, but if people seem to be interested in this, I might do one again in another month or so, maybe with a theme or something to make it a little different, and make the deadline longer. Actually, while I'm on it, if anyone would like to do this at a later date could you either pm me or make a post in this thread, because I won't bother trying this again if the spark isn't there.

I wanted to enter, but my schedule is so busy. There was no way I could write a decent sonnet in the two weeks notice.

If you make another one, with a later deadline, I'd try though.
