(While I was writing the fight scene near the end of the chapter, at the time I had absolutely NO idea where I was going with it. All I did was write as the ideas came out. For me, the best part about writing is when that happens, when you let your imagination take over your pencil, or keyboard, and just go with the flow. I for one think it's the best feeling in the world.)

Chapter 27:

Tylor was in the infirmary the next morning with Dr. Kadowaki to take off the cast. It seemed like ages since the last time he was able to use his right arm. He rubbed his arm and said, “It’s so good to finally get out of that thing.”

“The X-rays say your arm is just fine, but try not to over-do it. The way you’ve been banging it around the last few days I’m surprised none of the bones have been shattered.”

Tylor hoped off the medical bed. “I’ll be careful, Dr. Kadowaki.”

She crossed her arms. “I still can’t understand how your arm was able to heal that quickly. A broken arm takes almost a month to fully heal, yet yours healed in a matter of days.”

“Hey, I’m just as surprised as you are.”

“Squall, Tylor! Please report to the bridge immediately.”

Tylor grabbed his swords and said, “Well, thanks for removing my cast, Dr. Kadowaki.”

“You be careful out there. I don’t want to see you in here again any time soon.”

Tylor smiled. “No promises.”

Tylor and Squall arrived at Cid’s office at the same time. The controls for the Garden were finished. Three tall objects stood out of the floor, the only words to describe them were giant joysticks. Tylor knew how they worked. The Garden moved depending on how someone pushes or pulls those things. Quistis, Xu and another SeeD named Nida were there to greet them on the bridge. They began clapping as Quistis said, “Greetings commander!”

“Don’t call me that.” Squall said.

“We thought you should have a title. So Quistis and I decided on commander.” Xu looked at Tylor and asked, “How’s your arm, Tylor?”

Tylor flexed the muscles on his right arm to show them. “Never felt better.”

“That’s good to hear.”

Quistis said, “Sorry to carry things out on our own, but Xu and I assigned duties.”

“I’ll take care of all the supplies needed in the Garden.” Xu told them.

Quistis added, “And I’ll help take care of the students with Dr. Kadowaki. You can just focus on our destination and battle plans. And, ah…” She thought for a moment. “Will you let Selphie rest a while? I think she’s exhausted from the missile base mission. She could use some rest. How does that sound to you?”

“Fine…” Squall told her.

“Alright, I have some reports for you two already.” Xu said.

“Hey, Squall.” Nida said, “By the way, you know the FH technicians were fixing the Garden, right? They just finished. The Garden’s ready to go anytime.” He added, “Oh yeah, I’ll be piloting the Garden. FH technicians taught me everything about piloting this thing. Let me know when you want to go.”

“Any suggestions on where we should go?” Quistis asked.

“I think we should go back to Balamb.” Tylor told them. “After everything that’s happened the town must be pretty shaken up. We should check to see if everything is OK over there. Plus, Balamb might be Galbadia’s next target.”

“Tylor’s right,” Xu pointed out, “Balamb is a harbor town, just like FH.”

Tylor looked at Squall and asked, “What do you think, Squall?”

Squall was silent for a moment, he was thinking. He nodded and said, “Our next destination is Balamb. Announce the departure.”

“Roger!” Nida faced the controls and grabbed a small microphone. “May I have your attention please. This is the bridge. The Garden will be leaving FH shortly. Now I’ll hand the mic to our leader, Squall.” He handed the mic to Squall and said, “Make a speech.”

“A speech…? Forget it. Cut the mic!”

Tylor laughed and said, “Give it to me.” Nida handed him the mic. “This is Tylor speeking. This marks the beginning of our journey to defeat the sorceress. Our first destination is Balamb. Even though we’re heading home I want everyone to be cautious. We don’t know who, or what will be waiting for us when we get there. For all we know, Galbadia may have Balamb under their control. Do not leave the Garden until Headmaster Cid, Squall or I instruct you to do so. A party will be sent to Balamb to investigate. When they confirm that it is safe to enter the town you will all be allowed to leave the Garden and visit your families. The party will consist of myself, Squall, Zell and Irvine. Quistis and Rinoa will stay behind to manage the Garden in our absense. Selphie is relieved from duty to rest until further notice. We will be leaving momentarily, thank you for your time.”

It took about half a day of travel to make it back to Balamb. Before the Garden was drifting at sea so it took much longer to traverse that distance. Now that the Garden was repaired it moved much faster and was easier to control.

As they approach the small continent of Balamb Tylor told Nida to land the Garden somewhere on the eastern side of the continent. He told them that it would be safer if they parked somewhere out of sight. They landed the Garden near the spot where it had once stood, before everything had happened. The landscape was torn apart by the missiles.

Tylor, Squall, Zell and Irvine took a car from the garage and drove it down the empty road. As they approached they noticed a large red object floating beside the town’s docks. A large glowing ring rotated under it.

“What is that?” Irvine asked from behind the wheel.

Tylor told them, “It’s Galbadia Garden.”

They all looked at him. “Are you serious?” Zell asked.

“Balamb Garden was able to transform into a mobile fortress, it’s no surprise that Galbadian Garden is the same.”

“The sorceress is in control of Galbadia Garden now. She must be here looking for Ellone.” Squall looked at Tylor. “You knew the Galbadian army would be here. That’s why you told no one to leave the Garden.”

Tylor shrugged. “I’m psychic.” He looked at Irvine and said, “You’ll have to park here. There won’t be anywhere else to park the car inside the town. The entrance will be blocked off.” Irvine nodded and pulled the car off to the side of the road. They got out of the car and walked the rest of the way to town.

The town of Balamb was full of Galbadian soldiers. A truck was parked in the middle of the road, acting as a barricade to keep people from leaving or entering the town.

Zell shouted, “What the hell!? What’s goin’ on here!?” He noticed a soldier standing beside the truck and ran up to him. “Yo…! What’s goin’ on in there!?”

“This town is under the control of Sorceress Edea! The town is off-limits while we conduct our investigation! It will last several days! Once we’re through with our investigation here, you’re next. So just stay out and stay put!”

Squall said, “Forget it, let’s look for another way in.”

The soldier walked up to them and said, “You guys look suspicious. What are you doing here?”

“…What’s Galbadia doing in a town like this?” Squall asked.

“What do you want? Are you residents here?”

Zell yelled, “YEAH, that’s right! At least residents should be allowed in!”

“It’s OFF-LIMITS! You cannot enter or leave. Do you understand!?”

“Hah!? Who do you think you’re talkin’ to?” Zell asked as he went into on of his many fighting stances.

Tylor sighed and looked at the soldier. The soldier asked, “What? What is it now?”

“You said the town was off-limits. Does that mean we can’t deliver a message, either?”

Irvine came close and whispered into Tylor’s ear. “What are you talking about?”

“Shh…” He continued, “That’s too bad. We have some info on Ellone.”

“W-What? Elle…”

Tylor sighed and turned around. “But, if you won’t let us in I guess we’ll just have to leave.”

“Wait a minute!” Tylor stopped and looked over his shoulder. The soldier looked around to see that no one was looking. “Tell me everything you know about her! Do you actually know who she is?”

“This is classified information. We had direct orders from our commanding officer to only give it to your superiour.”

“Hmm…” The soldier thought for a moment. “I’m not sure I believe you.”

Tylor put his finger on the soldier’s chest. “Hey, we came here all the way from Deling City! Do you have any idea how impacient our leader is? If you don’t let us in right now our commanding officer will kick you out if this army so fast it’ll make your head spin. Capeesh?”

“Uhh… Ok, Ok. Go talk to the commander, she’s staying at the hotel. If you really do have information on Ellone, you will be rewarded.”

“Thank you, now move aside.”

The soldier moved to the side and let them through. When they were able to talk without being heard Irvine said, “Wow, Tylor. That was pretty impressive back there.”

Tylor smiled. “You’d be surprised at how far a little lie can get you.”

The first place they went to was Zell’s house. He ran inside and called, “Ma, I’m home!”

“Zell!” His mother said, “How on earth did you get into town!?”

“It’s all in the brains, ma. We just had some info on Ellone. Piece o’cake!”

“What a relief… I was worried you might have beaten up one of the guards.”

Tylor laughed. “Knowing our Zell, he just might have.”

“The soldiers have threatened that the sorceress will burn the town to the ground, should there be any disturbance.”

“Sorceress Edea?” Squall asked, “Is she here?”

“I noticed a woman with the Galbadian army. Gray hair, patch over one eye…”

“Must be Fujin. So they’re here…?”

Zell told his mom, “Leave it to me! I’ll get rid of those jokers!”

As they left Irvine pointed to the stairs and asked, “Hey Zell. What’s up there?”

They left Zell’s house and continued down the street toward the hotel. Two men were standing guard at the door. The soldiers stopped them when the got close. “What do you want!? If it’s the commander you’re looking for, I have strict orders not to let anyone through.”

“We have classified information about Ellone.” Tylor told them.

“…What? Information about Ellone?” The two guards turned their backs and began to whisper. “Hmm… More rumors?”

“You know that we’ll get a salary cut if we let’em through without confirmation.”

Zell began to tremble with rage.

“Yeah, I know… In this army your salary gets cut based on just how the boss is feeling…”

“I guess it goes with the territory when you can’t choose your own boss.”

Zell yelled, “Yo, listen! We have top-secret info! Bring the commander out here!”

The soldiers stared at him for a moment before turning around again. “There guys are kinda… suspicious, huh?”

“Yeah, totally!”

They turned around and said, “Have some respect for the captain! The captain is currently on patrol!”

“The captain will be sure to reward you. He’ll also take full responsibility… Go talk to the captain!”

Tylor sighed and said, “Well, looks like we’re on a wild goose chase. Might as well see where it takes us.”

“Where should we look first?” Squall asked.

“The docks are closer, let’s check there.”

Together they went to the docks. There were a few Galbadian trucks sitting in the parking lot. Two soldiers stood at the dock with a dog.

Tylor asked the soldier holding the dog’s leash, “Have you seen the captain? We have urgent news for him.”

“Oh, the captain? Yeah, he was just fishing here. He caught a few and got really excited. Said he was gonna eat’em right away.”

Tylor looked at the others. “Well, he’s not here. Let’s go look somewhere else.”

As they made their way back to the main street, they noticed smoke rising from one of the houses. Squall said, “A fire?”

They ran to the source and found that the smoke was coming from Zell’s house. Zell shouted, “Oh no, Ma!” As soon as they ran into his house they were hit by a horrible stench. “Ah, sick! What the hell is that smell!?”

They were all choking on the smell when Zell’s mother came in from the other room. “What’s going on?”

“Ma, what the heck is that smell? We thought there was a fire!” What they thought was smoke from a fire was actually coming from the stove in the kitchen.

“Just now, a man came in and asked if he could use the kitchen. I think he cooked some fish. The whole room is filled with this bad odor.”

Tylor said, with his nose plugged, “I guess we just missed him. We should keep looking.”

Before they left Irvine pointed to the stairs and asked, “Hey Zell. What’s up there?”

“That’s my room. We can’t stay at the hotel… Aaah, I guess we have no choice! Let’s just go to my room and rest. And it’s not like I’m inviting you guys, OK!? It’s ‘cause we have no choice!”

“We promise not to touch anything.” Tylor said as they went up the stairs.

Zell’s room was pretty well kept for a guy’s room. His bed was beside the window. A punching back hung from the ceiling beside a bunch of guns on the wall. One of his T-boards were leaning against the wall.

“So this is Zell’s room?” Squall asked.

Irvine rubbed his head. “Well, it’s not very interesting hangin’ out in a guys room anyway… Whoa! What is that!?” He ran over to the guns on the wall. “These are some o’them old-school rifles!”

“Those are my grandpa’s!” Zell told him, “Don’t even think about it.”

“Oh man, oh man! These are so COOL!”

Zell rubbed his head in embarrassment. “…Heh-heh… Well… Alright… Go ahead, check’em out.”

Irvine took one of the guns from the wall to examine it. It went off in his hand and shot a nice hole into Zell’s punching bag.

“YOOOO!!! The HELL you doin’!!!?”

Tylor sighed and said, “Did you actually think he wasn’t going to?”

They took a few minutes to rest and think about what to do next. “So what are we supposed to do now?” Squall asked.

Irvine said, “I don’t know. We know he was here a few minutes ago, but we don’t know where he went after that.”

Tylor suddenly got and idea. “I’ve got it!”

“What is it, Tylor?” Squall asked.

“The captain was here cooking fish, right? In doing so he stunk up the whole place. Right now he must smell as bad as the house does.”

“What are you gettin’ at?” Zell asked.

“Remember that dog at the docks? They’re supposed to be using that dog to track Ellone’s scent.”

Irvine’s eyes widened as he said, “Oooh, I get it! Like, we use that dog to find the captain!”

“Exactly! We already stink with the stuff, so all we have to do is get the dog to sniff us. After that, we follow the dog and find the captain!”

Zell stood up. “Then what are we waiting for!? Let’s do it!”

They got back to the docks went up to the soldier with the dog. Tylor kneeled down and give his hand to the dog to sniff.

“Hey, what are you doing?” The soldier asked.

The dog barked and ran off. It had it’s scent. All that was left now was to follow it.

“You idiots! What scent did you have the dog sniff!?”

“The dog’s gettin’ away!” Zell shouted.

They ran after the dog and followed it to the train station. The dog let out a howl to show that it found something before running inside the train. They heard a crash from inside as Raijin jumped out of the door and ran off. The dog chased after him.

Squall said, “It’s Raijin! Come on!”

When they arrived at the hotel the doors were wide open. The two soldiers guarding the hotel stopped them as they approached. “Hey, you! Stand back. This could be dangerous! The commander is just about to-”

“OWWW!!!” Raijin flew out of the hotel and landed in front of the soldiers. “Ouuuch… F-Fujin… C-Control your temper, ya know? I was patrollin’, just like ya told me. I even woke up that search dog, sleepin’ on the job, ya know?” He pointed at the soldiers and said, “You guys, help me out here! We’ve gotta calm Fujin down, ya know!?”

“RAIJIN!!!” Zell shouted.

Raijin looked really surprised when he saw them. “Wooooow! What are you guys doin’ here!?”

“We’re here to liberate Balamb, ya know!?” …I mean… uhh… We’re here to liberate Balamb!”

“Seifer told us to give you a whoppin’ if we saw you, ya know!” He said to the men, “You soldiers help me out, too!” The two soldiers brought out their swords as Raijin brought out his Bo staff.

“You’ll pay for this, Raijin!” Zell shouted as they grabbed their weapons too.

Tylor and Squall each took a soldier because they had swords. Zell and Irvine worked together to fight against Raijin.

Tylor charged at his enemy with Apocalypse in his hand. The Galbadian soldier parried the attack as it came down and counter attacked with a stabbing motion. Tylor moved his body to the side just in time to avoid getting stabbed. Tylor knocked the sword away from his body and lifted his own above his head. The soldier held his weapon over his head to try and block the attack. When the two weapons made contact the soldier’s sword shattered into pieces. Suddenly the man was thrown back by a burst of energy that came from Apocalypse.

Tylor had never unleashed an attack like that before. He would have said it was because he had the use of his right arm back if not for the burst of energy.

Zell and Irvine were knocked to the ground by Raijin. Squall was still fighting the other soldier so it was up to Tylor to take Raijin.

Tylor held out his hand and yelled, “Water!” A sphere of water formed around Raijin’s body, trapping him. It lifted him up in the air and slammed him into the ground.

As he cleared his throat of the water he said, “That hurts, ya know!?”

Tylor ran up to him with Apocalypse dragging on the ground. Just like last time, when he attacked his sword created another burst of energy that throw Raijin into the wall of the hotel.

“Ughhh, you got me, ya know…”

Squall had finished off the other soldier. Zell got back to his feet and shouted, OHHHH YEAHHHH! The commander’s gonna get a whoopin’, too!” They saw Fujin standing in the hotel when they entered. Zell began to crack his knuckles. “So I guess you’re the commander! Pack your bags and get the hell outta Balamb!”

“…Raijin, defeated…?”

“That’s right, BABY! Now, where’s Seifer and the sorceress!? You’re all goin’ DOWN!”

“Zell, calm down.” Squall told him. He turned back to Fujin and said, “Fujin, looks like you’re on your own. Are you still willing to fight?”

“Rage!”

“BWAHA HA HA!!! She’s not alone!”

“W-Who’s there!?” Zell asked.

Raijin ran into the hotel and took his spot beside Fujin. “Major come-back, ya know! Actually, I feel a lot better now. In fact, I feel invincible, ya know!”

“How the…!? I thought we defeated you!” Zell said.

Raijin and Fujin brought out their weapons. “Time to get serious, ya know!?”

Fujin’s weapon was a large circular blade that she throws at her enemies. She tossed it at Tylor, who deflected it with his sword. The force of the attack knocked him back a few feet. Before he could recover from the attack Raijin was already in front of him. The end of his Bo staff hit him in the stomach and sent him soaring into the wall. He dropped Apocalypse during the impact, causing it to land on the other side of the room.

Tylor had blacked out for a few minutes. To him, it seemed like one second he was sitting on the ground at the beginning of the fight and the next the fight was almost finished, with Fujin and Raijin as the victors.

Fujin lifted her hand and said, “Tornado!” Strong gusts of wind entered through the hotel’s windows and began to circulate in the lobby around Squall, Zell and Irvine.

Squall was thrown into a wall, Irvine landed behind the reception desk and Zell hit a plant. The fight was not leading in their favour.

Tylor didn’t know how long he had been out for. All he knew is that he had to fight. The others were out of commission, so it was up to him now.

Got to his feet and pulled Armageddon out from its strap on his back. The sword began to make strange sounds as he held it in his hands. The various metal gears and plates on the blade began to move and rotate. Tylor didn’t know what was happening. As the sword moved and shifted he could feel a different kind of power resonating inside him. It had happened before when Apocalypse had created those burst of energy, but he hadn’t noticed it at the time because he was preoccupied by the battle.

He began to hear noises inside the blade, starting from the bottom and moving up. It sounded like locks opening. As each lock opened he felt a power moving through the sword up his arm and into his body.

Raijin ran up to Tylor. “You’re too slow, ya know!” He swung his Bo staff at Tylor’s head. There was a blur of movement, followed by a clash. Before he could realise what happened, Raijin was thrown across the room. In a movement too fast for even he to see, Tylor had parried the attack with such a strong force that it threw Raijin through the air.

Tylor saw Apocalypse beginning to shake across the room. He didn’t know how, but it felt like the two swords wanted to be together.

Fujin threw her circular blade. As the blade moved it let off a gust of wind that ripped up the floor under it. Tylor jumped out of the way to avoid being hit. Raijin cast a Thundara spell right after. The electricity flew out of his hand and jumped to the ceiling. Tylor lifted his sword over his head just as the bolt came crashing down and deflected it. Fujin’s blade had come back like a boomerang. Tylor jumped out of the way again.

He tucked his body to roll as he landed. During the roll he grabbed Apocalypse with his free hand. He stood up and held both swords to either side of his body. The door in his mind suddenly opened. It usually did that when he was in trouble. But the power didn’t flow through his body like it usually did. Instead, it ran down his arms and into each of his swords. They both glowed with a bright golden aura, and in a movement that wasn’t his own, he lifted them over his head and pushed them together. The various gears and plates on Armageddon began to uncouple as the bandages covering Apocalypse’s blade started to unravel. They linked together and in a sudden burst of energy and light the two swords merged together to create a new sword.

Tylor had thought the swords were big enough on their own. This new sword he held was at least as long as both of them put together, at twice the width. Its blade was mixed with metal plates and white bandages that somehow created a kind of unity within the pattern. The sword had no handle, it had fused with Tylor’s right arm, which was now made entirely out of metal. A feathered wing as large as Tylor’s body stuck out of the side of the blade. Before, he had been holding both swords as inanimate objects, as weapons. But now, as he stood there, he was one with Armageddon and Apocalypse.

His voice had changed. As he spoke it came out as something that could only be described as metallic echoes. “With the power that makes us one, I shall use to defeat thee.” He lifted the sword over his head. “The heavens shake as I release our power. Wave of Purity!” With one powerful swing he brought the sword to the ground. A whirlwind of golden wind was created by this action. Every window and light bulb in the lobby shattered as Raijin and Fujin were thrown into the wall. The wallpaper began to tear as on of the doors was ripped off its hinges. When it was all over, the sword let out a light so bright it could sear out the eyes of anyone who looked directly into. When the light had faded, Tylor collapsed on the ground and gasped for air. Both swords lay on the floor beside him.

Squall, Irvine and Zell got to their feet and surrounded Tylor. Irvine asked, “Tylor, that was amazing! How did you do it?”

Once Tylor caught his breath he said, “I… don’t know. It just happened, I didn’t have any control over it.” He couldn’t explain exactly how he felt. At the time, it felt like he was just one person, but an entity with three separate minds thinking and acting in synchronization.

“Can you stand?” Zell asked.

Tylor tried but found that he couldn’t on his own. “No, I need some held.”

Zell and Irvine each took one of Tylor’s arms and lifted him to his feet. Together they supported his weight.

Fujin and Raijin were coming back to their senses. Squall walked up to them and asked, “Are the two of you taking orders from the sorceress?”

“Negative!” Fujin said as she and Raijin got to their feet.

“The sorceress has nothin’ to do with us, ya know!? We’re actin’ on our own!”

“Own plan…?” Squall asked.

“We’re on Seifer’s side, ya know!”

“…That’s up to you, but enough is enough. This isn’t an internal Garden conflict.”

“…Negative.”

“We can’t back out, ya know… Seifer has a lot of followers, but we’re his only friends… We’re a posse, ya know…? The Galbadian soldiers are only listening to Seifer ‘cause they fear the sorceress. Without us, Seifer wouldn’t have a posse, ya know…?”

Zell told them, “If you guys stand behind him that much, tell frickin’ Seifer to stop this nonsense!”

“Affirmative!”

“We ain’t no sell-outs! We’re behind Seifer all the way, ya know!?”

Squall looked at the ground, he seemed disappointed. “OK… Understood. So you want nothing to do with Garden now?” Everyone looked at Squall, then back to Fujin and Raijin.

“…From now on, we’re not gonna hold back.”

Squall sighed and began walking toward the door.

“Hold on a sec!” Irvine shouted.

Raijin hunched over in pain. “Don’t wanna… talk anymore, ya know… Kinda painful… ya know…”

“Wimp!” Fujin kicked him in the shin. “Run!” Together, they ran out of the lobby.

“…You cool with that?” Irvine asked.

Squall turned his back to them. “Friend or foe… It all comes down to circumstance. That’s how we were raised. It’s… nothing special.” He did his usual pose, indicating he was deep in thought. A few moments later he said, “Let’s go.”
