We had done it. We had stolen the Amulet. Now was the hard part...getting out.
I replaced the painting as Sharra turned towards the door. Would we make it? I followed her past the baron's bed, to the door, and listened as she peeked through the keyhole into the hallway beyond.
"What is it?" I tapped her on the shoulder, mouthing the words. Habitually, I added sign language with it.
"The guard's just outside," she answered, soundless.
I gritted my teeth. Wonderful. How do we get out, now?
Together, we looked around the room. There was a window on the other side of the room, on the other side of the baron and his four poster...if we could open that and jump out without getting hurt or making noise... |

Lyaro grasped the boy by the shoulders and pushed him to one side. Then she walked over to the door and muttered a few words. The wall slid back.
The boys eyes widened. "You're not going to take me down there, are you?"
"Erm, let me think, yes." Lyaro twitched her hand under her robe and the boy came flying towards her. She grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and dragged him down the tunnel. The entrance closed and they were left in complete darkness.
"I hope you can see in the dark." said Lyaro softly into his ear. "I can."

Sharra
The window was our only escape. I silently began to creep towards it, Cassy following close behind. We made our way across the room and Cassy went to unlock the latch on the window when the Baron suddenly shot up in his bed. Cassy and I both gasped and the Baron looked at us, seeing to young boys holding one of his books and his precious Amulet.
"Thieves!" He shouted. Within moments the guard burst into the room and we leapt from the window.
It was alot farther down then I had expected, but the cloth overhang caught us and we bounced off of it onto the ground. The sounds of barking caught our attention and we darted toward the wall, scrambling up and over only to slide into a gap in the wall of an empty canal. |

Hunter swallowed. Of course he could see in the dark. The only light he had ever ssen was artificial.
He had found the man in the black mask; the problem was getting back to his uncle. Before three o'clock, of course...
Remembering his crufew, the boy struggled fiercly. He didn't want to be late again, the first time was bad enough. |

Lily hid behind the shadows in the alleyway, feeling nervous and slightly scared.
"Okay," she whispered. "Are you ready?"
Through the darkness, Trixie's voice came quietly. "Yeah, now stop talking!"
As they waited, they both wondered if they'd encounter the Midnight Man tonight, and if they'd succeed.

Trixie slowly lead Lily down in the dark. They got to a small ally and saw a dark figure go into a tunnel with a boy. She motioned for Lily to follow. Weither it was the man or not they had to help the boy. They walked into the tunnel and felt their way through it listening for footsteps and moving towards them.

Growing desparate, Hunter turned around and bit the man's hand as hard as he could, then, when he loosened the grip on his shoulder, he pulled away and ran in the direction they had come.
But the wall had already been closed behind them.
Frantically, Hunter glanced aorund in the darkness for a way out, but he couldn't find one. |

Trixie let her eyes adjust but she still couldn't see that well. SHe heard fleeing footsteps coming towards them and she put her hand to her knife. She saw a figure and her hand snapped out grabbing their shoulder. She heard a muffled gasp and she quickly put her hand over the person's mouth. It was a little boy, he struggled, but she finnally got him to stop.
"Where did that man go?" She wispered lightly in his ear. He shrugged, "I need to know, we are your friends." She could feel the tension in the boy's shoulders. The fear that racked his struckter.
"What are we going to do?" Lily asked quietly.
"I'm not sure, but we need to follow him." She replied in a low tone. The boy tried to pull free of her grasp. "Whats the hurry buddy?"
"I...I...I have to get home." He wispered.
"Home will wait, I'll explain it to your parents, you were helping me." She said,
"And why would they care?" He asked,
"Trust me, they'll find room to forgive you. Now lets walk and see if we can find him." SHe said leading him ahead of her. She had a tight grip on his shoulder keeping him with her and making sure that he didn't go anywhere. Lily followed close behind careful where she put her foot. |

Hunter glanced around wildly. Suddenly he saw several ways of escape, but whenever he tensed to run, she would grip his shoulder tighter so he couldn't. there was one time he thought about biting the girl, but they haven't done anything yet to deserve that. As much as he wanted escape, he couldn't bring himself to do it.
A sudden image flasshed through his mind of his uncle searching for him, then of the horror of returning home, and he shuddered violently. He didn't want to go back, though he knew it would be impossible to hide from his uncle. |
