Welcome to the first of Fand’s Fantastic Challenges. The name may be a little misleading; the entry doesn’t necessarily need to be fantasy, but may fall into any of the genres, so long as it’s prose. The winner’s reward, you ask? As points are put back to 500 every few weeks, the 750 points I’ll give the winner are only there to sweeten the deal. The main prize is a month’s worth of in-depth critiques on whatever you write!

So what’s the challenge this time? Write a short story in any category, incorporating a theme, image, line, or subject of the following song (Those to Come, by The Shins). Keep in mind that this is not a songfic, so I'd prefer if you didn't put whole stanzas into the fic, but if you'd like to creatively incorporate quotes into the prose itself, that will definitely be taken into account during the judging!

Eyeless in the morning sun you were
Pale and mild, a modern girl
Taken with thoughts still prone to care
Making tea in your underwear
You went out in the yard to find
Something to eat, to clear your mind
Something bad inside me went away.

Quaking leaves and broken light
Shifting skin of the coming night
The bearers of all good things arrive
Climb inside us, twist and cry
A kiss on your molten eyes
Myriad lives, like blades of grass
Yet to be realized bow as we pass.

They are cold
Still
Waiting in the ether to form
Feel
Kill
Propogate only to die
Dissolve
Magically, absurdly
They'll end
Leave
Dissipate coldly
And strangely return.

Hop to! You can either post your entries in this thread, post them on the literary boards and PM me the link, or just PM them to me. Also, if you intend on entering, let me know below.

Contests ends 10 January, 2007.

EDIT: Extended through until 14 January, 2007.

Best of luck!

The likes of me is scary? interesting thought, that should perhaps be rethunked.

I shall use this to work my fingers around my characters of a new story.

I'll try. But does it matter how we interpret said song, because there are many possible ways to interpret it.

Sab >> Wink That's why I chose it. As long as I can see some sort of correlation between story and song, you're free to do whatever you like! Subsequent challenges might have more specific songs, but I thought this would be a good one to begin with.

And it looks like so far, our entrants (or possible entrants) are: Jig, Clau, Imp, Snoink, Trident, and Sab. Wow, and it's only the second day! Very Happy This is going even better than I expected!

I'm thinking about it... I may enter, though I've never tried writing anything based on a song before, so that could be interesting.
