The quote of the week contest is pretty much self-explanatory. Using this thread, you can submit nominations for each week's quote. However, the quote must meet the following qualifications:

1. It must be about writing.

2. The quote must be clean; that is, it cannot have any objectionable language in it. If you are unsure about a quote, pm it to Nate first.

3. When submitting the quote, remember to include the author as well.

4. Each member may only submit one quote per week. Submitting more than one quote will automatically disqualify anyone who submits more than one quote for a week.

Each Monday, Nate will examine the prior week's nominations and will decide which one he likes best. The member whose nomination is picked will win 100 points. Also, a quote can be submitted more than once, although not in the same week. Moreover, the author of the quote could be anybody, including you.

This forum is only for submitting the quote of the week! Any off topic posts will be deleted!

Both of these quotes amuse the heck out of me.

"Be suspicious of writers who like to talk too much about the craft of writing. Writing reasonably well takes a lot of time. Writing extremely well takes damned near forever. Writers who write extremely well don't have time to talk about it. They probably haven't figured it out anyway. Learn from good fiction and poetry what these things are. If you must talk with writers, ask them what they had for lunch or when they were last at Walmart."

--Lucinda Beatty

"It is misleading to say that writing is a pleasure, though there will be moments of great, unparalleled pleasure at times when one is writing. Most of the time, however, writing is a painful activity, a task so difficult as to drive its practitioner half mad. I cannot recall the times I have asked myself why in God's name I pursue a vocation so rife with disappointment and failure. Then I promptly go back to work."

Here are several from me:

"If we had to say what writing is, we would define it essentially as an act of courage."
~Cythia Ozich

"I will go so far as to say that the writer who is not scared is happily unaware of the remote and tantalizing majesty of the medium."
~John Steinbeck

"The world is made up of stories, not atoms."
~Muriel Rukeyser

"You must be unintimidated by your own thoughts because if you write with someone looking over your shoulder, you'll never write."
~Nikki Giovanni

"The main thing is to immerse ourselves in the material, and reach for the intensity."

Some editors are failed writers, but so are most writers.
--T. S. Eliot

Writers would be warm, loyal, and otherwise terrific people--if only they'd stop writing.
--Laura Miller from a salon.com review of the movie Finding Forrester

If you can't annoy somebody, there is little point in writing.
--Kingsley Amis

Asking a writer what he thinks about criticism is like asking a lamppost what it feels about dogs.
--John Osborne

For the week of 1/17, ZZAP has won with:

"The world is made up of stories, not atoms."
~Muriel Rukeyser

I'm going to add on one more rule; each member can only submit one quote per week. If a member submits more than one quote, then he/she is automatically disqualified for that week.

Let the contest begin for next week!

“I write. I write that I am writing. Mentally I see myself writing that I am writing and I can also see myself seeing that I am writing. I remember writing and also seeing myself writing. And I see myself remembering that I see myself writing and I remember seeing myself remembering that I was writing and I write seeing myself write that I remember having seen myself write that I saw myself writing that I was writing and that I was writing that I was writing that I was writing. I can also imagine myself writing that I had already written that I would imagine myself writing that I had written that I was imagining myself writing that I see myself writing that I am writing.”
~Salvador Elizondo

there are so few quotes around just on writing, but heres a few if they're in any way appropriate:

"Does it mean this, does it mean that, that's all anybody wants to know. Bugger them, darling. I say what any decent poet would say if you dared ask him to analyse his work: If you see it, dear, then it's there."

-Freddie Mercury.

"I certainly had no feeling for harmony, and Schoenberg thought that that would make it impossible for me to write music. He said, 'You'll come to a wall you won't be able to get through.' So I said, 'I'll beat my head against that wall.' "
