Being a new member of the Young Writers Society is tough. At first, the site seems huge and it seems like everyone already knows everybody else. But what everyone here respects those who come to review, and it's very easy to make new friends.
If you have any questions, this FAQ is meant to help you navigate YWS. The best thing to do, though, is just to start posting right away! Go to the Welcome area under Community, and introduce yourself.

Who owns this site?
This site is owned by Nathaniel Lee Caldwell. He can be reached at webmaster@youngwriterssociety.com and will try to answer any questions you may have, although it may take a while (he is very busy with law school). However, the administrator is not responsible for the opinions of other members on this board.
Who runs this site?
YWS has two site administrators. One is of course Nate, and the other is Meshugenah.
YWS also has two moderator groups: those in Big Brother (dark green) are global moderators, while those who are in the Junior Moderators (light green) are moderators only in specific forums. Junior Moderators are split into crews, and you can see which crew moderates which forum underneath the description of the forum.
Additionally, there are also Instructors and Greeters. Instructors are those people who go above and beyond in reviewing, and you'll see them in purple around the site (the same color used to distinguish Roman Senators). Greeters, in light blue, are responsible for ensuring each new member gets a warm welcome.
How can I volunteer?
If you would like to volunteer, please see the Applications subforum at the Information Desk area in Community. While you cannot apply to become a Junior Moderator or Moderator (you are nominated to those positions), being a greeter or instructor is how almost everyone starts.
Copyright?
Any piece that a member posts on this board remains in total whole their work. No member relinquishes the copyright or any rights derived therefrom in posting their work on the forums of The Young Writers Society. YWS will not reproduce their work without the author's explicit permission to do so. If you are still concerned about copyright, please e-mail webmaster@youngwriterssociety.com or pm Nate.
How do I post my story/poem/article?
To post your work, go to "Writing" at the top of every page then to "Submit Your Work." However, before posting something new, we do ask that you please take the time to make at least two reviews of someone else's work, and to take the time to read the rules. You should also keep in mind that the more work you review, the more your work will be reviewed.
How do I review another person's piece?
To make a review, simply go to "Writing" then "Read and Review," and look around until you find something that may be interesting to you. After you have read the piece, click on "post reply," which can be found at the top and bottom of the page on the left hand side. You can then make whatever comments you like. Note that there is no need to feel in the "subject" box.
What are ranks and how do I move up in ranks?
Depending on how many posts you have made, your rank can change.
New Member: 0-4 posts
Novice: 5-14 posts
Junior Writer: 15 - 49 posts
Writer: 50 - 99 posts
Senior Writer: 100 - 249 posts
Novelist: 250 - 499 posts
Speaker of the Forum: 500+ posts
Additionally, after you have made 250 posts, you may change your rank to whatever title you wish to have.
What are points and how do I get them?
You get at least 10 points for every post or topic you create. After that, you get .2 points for each character in the post with a maximum of 50 points total.
Points are used to post in Storybooks (5 points), and to add new stories & poems (150 points each). It also costs 500 points to create a new storybook.
Also, all points are reset to 300 every two weeks as they are used to help determine the featured member of the week.
How can I get my own avatar?
If you would like to have your own avatar, just go to your avatar settings under 'My YWS' and upload your avatar. If it's too big, YWS will automatically resize it for you.
What are groups and how can I join one?
Groups, also called usergroups, are kind of like clubs within YWS. Each usergroup is focused around a particular subject and have their own private forum. Some of the ones we have right now is Kingdom of Evandor (roleplaying group), YWS Book Club, and Middangeard (LOTR). If you wish to join one, or view others, click on the "YWS Groups" link under Community at the top of the page. Browse through the usergroups that we have, click on one you think you may like, and then click "Join Group" when viewing that group's forum. Some groups require validation, so it may take a while.
For more information on usergroups, please see the "Rules, Information, and Advertising" link in "YWS Groups."
Can I advertise my writing site?
Of course! Competition is never a bad thing, so if you want to advertise your site, go right on ahead. However, please only use "The Lounge" to advertise your site.
Unfortunately, there is no affiliate system currently at YWS. If you are interested, though, in forging a closer relationship, you can contact Nate. |
