Her head hurt and she didn't understand the words that tumbled out of Mr. Warden's mouth. X chromosome? What? What was he saying? Weakly, she turned to the person sitting next to her for assistance, but as usual, Audrey wasn't paying attention to her, preferring to text under the desk as unintelligent students are apt to do.
Emma very abruptly decided she would be getting no help from her supposed partner and began to turn her head to the front of the room once more, but everything began to swim and she let out an uncharacteristic whine as she clutched her forehead. The sweaty man at the front of the room raised a perceptive eyebrow.
"Is there anything wrong, Ms. Bradshaw?" He questioned, tapping his ruler to the whiteboard impatiently, "Because, if not, I would like to continue my lesson." Emma winced at her biology teacher's sharp tone.
"N-no, sir," She mumbled, trying very hard not to grab at her forehead again, but Dear God! it hurt so, "please continue."
"Very well," He slapped the palm of his hand with the ruler. Again, Emma resisted the urge to wince. The noises seemed so very loud. What was wrong with her? She had just started to doze off at the beginning of class, surely that couldn't have caused a migraine this large? Or a headache at all? Emma was thoroughly confused and that just made her head pound. Tiredly, she lay it between her arms on her desk.
This would surely be a long 4th period, as Audrey's nimble fingers tapped her keyboard quickly. The soft noise lulled her to sleep.

"Emma. Emma, love, wake up," A soothing voice whispered, yet the undertone was decidently urgent, "Please love, wake up. It's Momma. Wake up baby girl." She didn't feel like waking up. Didn't the woman, Momma, know this? Emma was tired and her head was killing her. The last thing she remembered was falling asleep in Mr. Warden's class, and now...
"Where am I?" Emma croaked. She was startled at the sound of her own voice. It sounded hoarse, scratchy. Most likely from not being used in awhile. She didn't know how long, though. She hadn't even an idea where she was.
"The hospital, baby girl," Her momma replied, evidently very relieved that her child had atleast responded, "After Mr. Warden tried to wake you up at the end of your class, you tried to grab your bag and stumble out, but you threw up all over the floor. Don't worry, though. It's probably just a bug." Her momma patted Emma's hand, almost obsessively. She seemed to be trying to convince herself as well as Emma.
"I told you not to go to school, since you had that fever, but you never do listen any," A short laugh escaped the elder woman's lips, though it held no real mirth. Absentmindedly, her mind still in a hazy fog (most likely from the medicine being pumped into her at that very moment by the IVs that were hooked up to her), she noted her momma looked older somehow. That was odd. Even for a woman in her forties, Emma had always thought her momma was pretty for her age. Maybe she was biased and was finally seeing the truth in the fluroescent hospital lights.
"Baby, do you want anything to eat or drink?" Apparently, her momma was trying to keep herself busy. The old saying, you know, Emma thought, though it was quite muddy. Busy hands leave no time for idle minds. Maybe that was what Momma was doing? But she had told Emma everything was fine. She chanced a glance at the woman sitting in the hard plastic chair beside her hospital bed.
Her momma looked fidgety and nervous underneath her exterior. Though Emma wasn't exactly in her right mind, she knew when her momma lost her cool something was wrong. Her momma never lost her cool.
"I, I just wanna go to sleep, Momma," Emma replied softly, and her momma stopped the incessant rambling at once.
"Alright, then," She replied, after a lengthy silence, and stood up, "You just sleep tight then. I have to talk to your doctor, anyway. He said he'd give me the news, any time now."
The very last thing Emma heard before falling asleep was her momma's loud sobs and a doctor's awkward soothing tone outside her door, Room 108.

Everything will be brought together, kind of, in the first chapter. Please be patient. The romance won't start immediately. It won't even be the main focus of the plot, just like a co-focus.

Leave comments, if you will. I would love anything, good or bad.
