|
|
Hey all, this is Gahks with another spellbinding contest that challenges you with something different - I hope!
THE CHALLENGE:
Write a speech or an article of approx. 500-600 words debating ONE of the following statements:
"Creationism has the same value as science"
"State interference in civil liberties is justified"
"Earth's resources are there to be used, not conserved"
"Modern advertising is a necessary evil"
"History is irrelevant to the youth who are the future"
RULES AND GUIDELINES:
1. Write your chosen statement at the top of your entry.
2. You may choose either a biased or balanced argument. If you decide to take a biased point of view, please acknowledge other opinions, else you may call your own case into question. (These titles are deliberately designed to provoke thought and controversy! Go on, be daring...)
3. Whatever approach you decide to take, you must form your own personal opinion/response, either for or against the statement.
4. Don't look for the most obvious way to begin. Maybe open with the political and relate it to the personal; perhaps include a witty or unusual anecdote; or you could try a dramatic 'hook' to immediately grab your audience's attention. Similarly with endings: try to find a memorable image, or you could use a quote to appeal to authority, or relate back to the opening to give unity to the piece.
5. The best entries will give compelling evidence, present a logical and well-structured argument and show flair and originality.
6. AVOID LOGICAL FALLACIES!
PRIZES:
1st Prize: 100 Points
2nd Prize: 50 Points
3rd Prize: 25 Points
Please send your entries as PMs as the winning pieces will be posted here.
THIS CONTEST WILL CLOSE AT 2359 GMT ON 18TH MAY 2008. NO ENTRIES MAY BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS TIME, UNLESS WITH PRIOR NOTIFICATION AND THE ORGANISER'S CONSENT.
What are you waiting for? Get arguing!
