On the main page about instructors you find this:

An instructor routinely takes the time to critique submissions, publish writing tips, and may even offer an online class here at YWS. In short, instructors go above and beyond in helping others to improve their writing.

But what is really expected out of an instructor?

(1) Of course, anyone applying for a position is expected to follow all of the site rules and be a good member. These things are expected. If you aren't doing this, becoming an instructor is the least of your worries.

(2) "...takes the time to critique..." So, you have to critique, right? Yes! But do be aware that someone who critiques often and with good qualitiy will be more likely to get the position than someone who critiques rarely, or doesn't give but general input. An instructor should be the one with the best critiques, or the most helpful information. Everyone will look to you for your advice on their work; if you cannot provide, then you should not be in the position. At the least, an instructor should critique once every two weeks, though more often is preferred. Obviously, you are not expected to be on the site all of the time, but if you are on the site a lot and yet not critiquing, it is apparent that you're not putting in your best.

(3) "...publish writing tips..." This is an added bonus. Not many people do it, but it will make you look real good if you've written writing tips, or any sort of tips, for either the Writing Tip section or for the Resource section.

(4) "Instructors go above and beyond in helping others improve their writing." Keep this in mind while applying. Anyone could be helpful if they critique, but being an instructor is much more than that. Be willing to critique upon request, judge for contests, award critique prizes, as well as a variety of other things. You will be a part of a respected group of reviewers. Again, anyone can critique, but an instructor will put his/her all into the critique, not just a few minutes.

(5) Being an instructor is not a right, or a privilege. It is a job, and as such, do not become one just because you think you look good in purple. You will be expected to live up to your name as instructor, and if you cannot, then do not apply! Inactive instructors will be removed, unless otherwise noted.
