|
|
The most common question about the Lit Journal is, when will the next one be out? There are two answers.
If it does well, then we'll start accepting submissions for the next one beginning in May or June with a publication date of mid-September.
If, however, it does not do that well, then we'll start accepting submissions for the next one beginning in October with a publication date of mid-March 2009.
Doing well means we come out of this better than even. Breaking even means selling roughly 200 copies. If that happens, then awesome. If not, ah well. |

| Yeah, we gotta tell all our friends to buy it. Besides, some of us work in libraries or have friends who do. We can always tell the libraries to order it. |

You should keep in mind (if it hasn't already occured to you) that the second Journal probably won't sell as well as the first. It won't have the same novelty to it.
I'd imagine if you waited a year, the second journal would sell better.
On the other hand, if you do release one in Sep '08 and then another in Mar '09 you could potentially get a greater number (perhaps even double the number) of overall sales in the same time period then if only released one journal. |

Sureal ->> Aye, I've been thinking about that. Doing two a year may be overdoing it, while doing just one a year would definitely keep it as something special. But like you said, doing two a year would increase awareness, and besides, most literary journals come out as quarterly.
If we do end up doing two a year, the solution may be to start offering subscriptions. Say, something like $30 USD a year. That'd be at least $7 cheaper than buying each Journal separately due to shipping costs, and I could ship them out such that people would receive them at least a week before it's available online. But, that could only be done if the Journal does really well (plus, I'd have to figure out the laws governing subscriptions). It'd be good all around because the customer saves ~20% & gets it before everyone else, plus it earns more revenue for YWS since the books can be bought at a huge discount as well as ensures a guaranteed minimum of Journals would be sold. Doing it would bring the Journal closer to my goal of making it an actually writing journal; that is, authors can be paid cold, hard cash!
For now, though, I'm just going to wait and see what sales are like. I'm going to do as much as possible to turn it into a success, but even a recent book published by Gawker (a major blog with hundreds of thousands of dedicated readers) sold less than 100 copies. I hope (and think) the literary journal will do better than that, especially since I hate seeing how the only magazines for young writers suck and blow. It's like they're published by people whose understanding of young writers comes from Dora The Explorer and think Berkeley is Mecca. |

If it makes you feel better, Nate, I have six guaranteed purchases for the Journal and 20 highly likely ones.
And that's just the people off the top of my head. xD

How would you apply for your story to be in the Journal? How long does it have to be?

If possible, I think that we should make ourselves available in public publishing markets next time around. Because with more submissions, come more purchases.
Is there any way to send the journal description and submission process to the editors in charge of the Writer's Digest annual Novel and Short Story Market, or a similar publishing collection?

| I just want to say thanks again, Nate, for all the hard work you've put in on this, and I certainly hope (and really do think) that the Journal will catch on! |
