Note: The YWS Advanced Critiques forum is an experimental forum that if successful will carry on.

Posting Here

You may only post stories that are at least 5,000 words in length. Anything shorter will be deleted! However, posting is a little different in this forum. Rather than copying your work into the posting screen, you should only have short synopsis. Your work itself should be uploaded using the "Add an Attachment" function. Both .doc and .rtf are acceptable formats. You may upload .pdf as well, although it's not ideal for the purposes of this forum.

Why Would I Want To Post Here?

If you have written a long story, a novella, or a novel, then this is ideal for you. Most of YWS is biased toward shorter stories, and this forum will enable you to get the critique your work deserves.

Critiquing Here

To critique, first download the attachment. If you're using Wordpad to read the file or Microsoft Works, you should make all changes and comments in red. If using Microsoft Word, turn on the track changes option (this is explained at the end). The primary purpose of this is to allow you, the critiquer, to edit someone's story electronically much as you would on paper.

After you are done, upload the story using the "Add and Attachment" function so that the author can review and consider your changes. You are also encouraged to offer an overall review of the work in the posting screen (that is, your thoughts & feelings on the piece).

Quid Pro Quo

This forum operates under a Quid Pro Quo policy. That is, if you are asking for an advanced critique, then you are absolutely required to do the same for others. Failure to do so within two weeks will result in your work being deleted, and you will not be allowed to post another story again until you have performed at last two advanced critiques.

Costs

Posting a new story here is relatively expensive: 500 points. This is a quality & quantity control measure.

However, it costs nothing to critique. Unfortunately, due to technical issues, critiquers can still only receive a maximum of 50 points for their critique. It is thus highly encouraged, though not required, for the beneficiary of the critique (i.e., the author of the story) to donate points to critiquers.

Using Microsoft Word To Critique

First, turn on track changes. You can this by going to "Tools" then "Track Changes." Whenever you add something, it will show up in red underlined text.

To insert a comment, first highlight the text you are commenting on. Then go to "Insert" then "Comment."

Please use the question thread in this forum for questions!
