|
|
I've been wanting to run a contest for a while now, but was having trouble finding an interesting enough challenge. But I've stumbled across an idea that I think will do the job.
"For instance, gory horror causes repulsion. Quiet horror leaves the reader disturbed." ~ Shane Jiraiya Cummings
The contest involves the use of quiet horror. Here's a definition:
Quiet (or Soft) Horror:
Subtle, never visceral or too shocking, with atmosphere and mood providing the miasma of fear rather than graphic description.
And another:
Quiet: the quiet horror story goes about its creepy business without much mayhem or blood. Such stories may very well be otherwise classed as mainstream stories; consider Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery", for instance.
The challenge it to write a piece of Quiet Horror. That is, you must create a powerful sense of fear, using only atmosphere and mood. You must not use graphic description.
The piece that is the most disturbing while staying within the description of Quiet Horror will win. And don't worry, I scare pretty easily, so it shouldn't be too difficult.
Length can be from 250 words to up to 5,000 words, so use your imagination.
FIRST PLACE: Five In-depth critiques
SECOND PLACE: Three In-depth critiques
THIRD PLACE: One in-depth critique
(Note that I only critique fiction, I'm horrible when it come to poetry. )
To enter, PM the piece to me or post in the literary forums with "Quiet Horror" as a description.
DEADLINE: Saturday, July 31st, 2007
Have fun!
MM
Examples of Quiet Horror:
Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery"
Snoink's "The Queen of Dolls" (rated R)
####
ENTRANTS:
Royboy
writingluver5
Areida
Jasmine Hart
AetLindling
Jiggity
Phorcys
###
RESULTS:
The results are in! (obviously)
I just want to say thanks again to everyone who entered. In the end it was a close contest, and those that won were pieces that stayed true to the concept of "Quiet" horror. All were wondeful pieces, of course, but only a few met the requierments of Quiet Horror.
So...here they are!
Third Place: Phorcys ~ Whore of the Wind, Girl of the Tide
Second Place: Jiggity ~ Strands of Darkness
AND THE WINNER IS...
FIRST PLACE:
Areida ~ Hail Mary
Congrats again to all the winners, and you can use your prize critiques at anytime. Just send me a PM with the piece/pieces. You don't have to use them within a short time or anything, but just remind me that I owe you one. XD |

This sounds like it could be cool.
I might try.
But could you explain atmosphere a little more? |

Well basically, you should take a normal situation that would usually have a "Happy" atmosphere. Then when you introduce the horror element, it makes it all the more disturbing, because it's taking a happy experience and twisting it into dark territory.
I know, I know, it's not the most clear cut of sub-genres...

Hey, hey, if we're using already-written pieces here, can I put something up of my own? This is if I can't whip up anything else. Does it count, cause I'm not too sure about the end being quiet horror... Anyway, I just got an idea, so I may not need that. Get back to me. =]

Thanks MM.
I might enter.
I just need to think up something, and uh, write it.
I guess. |

| Ah, I didn't think I'd have any ideas to enter, but...I do! I think I'll PM you and ask about it, though, because I'm not sure. It's not graphic, in my opinion, but it's better to check. ^_~ |

| ^ If anyone isn't sure whether or not their story idea constitutes Quiet Horror, don't hesitate to PM. |

I really, really want to enter, but I have absolutely so sense of subtlety in me. So I'll try to get something done, but I dunno... |
