"So it's alright to ruin another's life so we could survive?" Caden snarled. "I don't think that's very fair."

"You've done it most of your entire life," Liskano said. "Everytime you steal, you could be stealing something that someone needed to live or to mke money for his family. Everytime you stole money from a person that person and his family could starve because that money you stole was to buy food."

"So you're saying without meaning to I'm causing people to starve?" Caden asked.

"Yes."

"Then I won't be a thief."

"We both know that won't happen. If you gave up theiving I know you might think you might as well give up your life."

Kesko sat on the roof of the inn, waiting for the army. "Hello River," he said to the presence that was behind him.

"How did you know it was me?" River asked.

"You know, as well as I do, the my senses are very accute."

"Yeah, I forgot. I've been arounds humans so much, I forget the we Elves have a better sense of perception."

"The army is drawing near, I can hear them."

"Me too. I'm worried that the Outlaws won't make it though."

"If their will is strong enough they will thrive."

"Can you teach me how to stop, or slow down, time, whatever you do."

"It's not that simple, you are part Speed Elf and Fighting Elf. You can go fast, but not as fast as me or Liskano. You can only go our speed if we bring you to it."

"Is there a way for me to learn."

"No, only if me and Liskano help you. When we bring you to our speed and let you go you can onlymantain it for a few minutes."

"It's not exactly without meaning," Caden said indignatly. "I need to survive. I'm careful who I steal from, you know; I don't steal from others who may need what they have. I steal from the pompous pigs that are eating pheasant and quail eggs while we are all trying to survive."

Liskano raised an eyebrow. "So you've never stolen from a poor man?"

"I steal from the guys with guards and dogs," Caden said. "I don't suppose that the poor can afford that."

"What do you think happened to the guards you escaped?" He asked. "They could've been poor men. All they saw was that you were threatinening their last way of money."

Caden sighed and rubbed his head. "They sided with the wrong man," he said adamantly.

River

"Yeah, I noticed that," I sighed, seating myself behind him, legs dangling over the side of the roof. "Kasko?"

"Yes," He responded.

"You say I'm half fighting Elf so you know my parents?"

"I knew your mother."

"What was she like?" Kasko turned to me, his features troubled for a moment and then he nodded.

"The fighting Elves are a strong race. Your mother was a fighting Elf, a strong, determined woman. She died saving your father's life. He was fast. One of the fastest I've ever known but he wasn't indestructable."

"Why didn't my father bring me up?" I asked, "You haven't told me anything of him."

"He didn't feel ready for a child," Kasko replied and then fell silent again.

Caden stepped into Hake's cell, quickly closing the door behind him. He held a thick rag in one hand and a kerosene lamp in the other.

Hake glared up at him. "Are you here to gloat?" he snapped.

"Partly," Caden said with a shrug. he glanced down at Hake's tied hands invoulantarily, clenching his teeth when he saw the bandages.

"What are you looking at?" Hake snarled.

"Your hands," Caden replied. "Interesting knot, isn't it? A traditional outlaw knot. The more you struggle, the tighter it gets." He grinned down at him. "How's your circulation?"

"Pardon me while I sew up my sides," he said sarcastically. "What are you here for?"

"I need to gag you, I'm afraid," Caden said with false remorse. "The soldiers will come down here, and we don't want you yelling and screaming and warning them."

Hake smirked. "I'll find a way to warn them, anyway."

"Then we'll knock you out if we have to," Caden said quietly.

"Who will, you?" Hake scoffed. "You couldn't knock me out, and you know it."

"I said we," Caden interupted. "And I'm not wasting my energy on you."

"And what will you use that energy for?"

"When the soldiers come. We're all going to fight back."

That made Hake laugh. "You? Fight? Caden, you ran from your first battle, remember?"

Caden drew his knife and clubbed the man over the head with one hard blow, knocking him out cold. Then, taking a shaky breath, he bent down and gagged Hake tightly.

Off in the distance Kasko could see smoke rising into the sky. "They're not far away now," he said.

"You ready for this?" asked River."

"Yes," and within a blink Kasko was gone.

"Caden," Liskano called, "the enemy draws near."

"I'm ready," Caden replied.

Kasko appeared right next Liskano from out of nowhere. "How far away are they, brother?" Liskano asked.

"About 5 miles at most. A lot of the citezens in the upper city are evacuating." Kasko drew his short sword. "To the death, my brother."

Liskano drew his sword. "To the death."

River

Alone on the roof, I sighed and stared out into the distance. The army moved closer until I could leave it no longer. I stood on the edge of the roof and carefully dropped down to the street and then entered the tavern once more.

"Are we going?" Alex asked. Caden and I both nodded. Alex was first to enter the old sewer and start the short walk to the main entrance. Then Caden climbed down the ladder, then Kasko, Molton and all the other outlaws waiting at the pub.
"You'll be alright collapsing this entrance?" I asked Liskano and Kasko.
"Of course," Liskano replied, "We be meeting you at the main entrance in a few mniutes and we be getting there first." I smiled and nodded agreeance. He was probably right.

True enough, Liskano and Kasko were waiting at the bottom of a rusty ladder. The main entrance to the swere was nothing elaborate but that small room lead to all the underground tunnels and if they got past us, they would be able to come at the other outlaws from all sides. Fortunately, the entrance here was only wide enough for five to stand side by side and we'd be able to kill the first few before they'd even climbed down the ladder.

Caden turned and saw Molton following after him. "What are you doing here?" he said, surprised.

"Fighting," Molton answered simply. "What are you doing here?"

"Molton you can't fight!" Caden cried. "You're too...too..." he broke off, cheeks flushing crimson.

"Too what?" Molton said with a small smile. "Too old?"

Caden blushed deeper, and Molton laughed. "You really can get red, you know that? I'm not too old to fight. You don't even know my age. I'm staying, and I'm fighting."

This got a reply of several laughs and cheers from the surrounding Outlaws, which made Caden revert to covering his face. He laughed with the others, but the sound of hte soldiers banging on the inn door above them reminded them of the gravity of the situation, and they fell silent.

"Where are they?" Molten whispered.

Liskano ears perked. "They be heading this way," he said. And all of a sudden booming resenated from above. "You be ready for this Caden?"

"More than ready," Caden replied. Suddenly the hatch cover came off revealing the face of the first soldier.

River

The first soldier went down with one of Alex's throwing knives through his throat, the second tripped over the body and snapped his neck on a lower rung of the ladder and the third didn't even make it inside before one of Liskano's knives took him in the heart. After that, they tried coming slowly but soon realised they were even easier to pick off so they rushed, leaping straight to the ground. I stood besid the ladder, opposite Kasko, and together, we beheaded them as soon as they landed, the others killing those who we missed.

"Careful now. They be going to throw a bomb down soon to widen the entrance. Then it will be hard to fight them off," Liskano called and we backed away from the entrance just as a small bomb landed at the base of the ladder.
"Let's just hope they don't have any bigger than that," Molton murmured.

Before the bomb blew, Kasko grabbed River and pulled her from the bombs blast range. "Thanks Kasko," River said. Soon the soldiers were pourng down 5 by 5.

"I like fair fights brother," Liskano said, "but they aren't making this fair with numbers."

"So let's make this fair," Kasko replied. After bringing themselves to speed, Kasko grabbed River and pulled her to their speed. "Be quick about this," Kasko said, "this will only last for a few minutes."

With that he ran forward and started slicing down soldiers.

River

I nodded and ploughed through their ranks, daggers flashing here and sword biting there. I can't explain how amazing, how thrilling it is to move at such a speed and yet how horrible it is to plunge your sword into a man's chest and have done the same to thirty others before he even realises. In that moment I understood both Liskano and Caden better than I ever had before and yet I knew that Liskano and his brother were right.

For me, this extra speed did not last long but I didn't halt when my feet slowed and the expressions on those soldier's faces were no longer so blurred. True I could not keep up with Liskano and Kasko but I was still much faster than these men and, for each of them that died, an outlaw was saved.

Caden started out hiding in the shadows and cutting down any man who came too close, but then he decided that was a cowardly way to fight and stepped out to confront the enemies openly.

After a while, Grey came bounding up beside him. The grim look on her face gave Caden the chills. "What went wrong?"

"We waited for the soldiers to come down our tunnel--the one in Molton's cellar--but they never came," she said grimly. "That gives us about 300 more men to deal with."

Caden swore. "Hake must've found some way to warn them..." he sighed and shook his head. There was no time worrying about that now.

He glanced around the battle peevishly, feeling slightly sick but managing to push it aside. The soldier's numbers had been reduced nicely, they were forced to come down one place only, and the Outlaws fought savagly to protect their way of life. But they were still losing.

Caden cursed again and swung to avoid a man's sword as it tried to cleave off his shoulder. "Where are those mangy hellhounds that Alex said would help?"

"Where are those mangy hellhounds that Alex said would help?" Caden muttered, not far to my right.
"Yeah, what's taking them so long?" Grey responded.
"Ask them yourself," Alex smirked, hurrying over, the creatures at her side.

Of course, that changed the whole nature of the fight. They were fierce, they were viscious and there was no chance we could trust them. Alex seemed to relax but the rest of us became more wary if anything and more cautious.

The fight raged on and our side was beginning to tire well they sent group after group of fresh men. It was then that I saw the body. I couldn't be sure at first but I thrust my dagger through the soldier facing me and hurried across.
"Molton!" I shouted, turning him over. His face was sliced across one cheak and blood seeped through his clothes from a wound to the thigh but his eyes were open if slightly distant.

I didn't wait to see if the others had noticed but I hurried, his extra weight barely slowing my feet, and placed him deeper in the tunnel along with the other injured. Some of the outlaws who had morales even higher than Caden or who were just no good in a fight were tending to the fallen men, women and children.
"Caden!" I shouted, tearing pieces of cloth from my top and grabbing a flask of water from a pile. "Caden, Liskano! Someone get over here!"
